What was Sai baba’s past?

Most accounts describe him as a Hindu Brahman who was adopted by a Sufi fakir, or mendicant. He later claimed to have had a Hindu guru. Sai Baba moved to Shirdi, in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, around 1858 and stayed until his death in 1918.
